Narrative Direction: East from Beaver Valley Trailhead
The northern trailhead for Stoneybrook Trail is just a few feet past the Josh Nazareth memorial footbridge on Beaver Valley Trail. The first few yards of the trail you will notice some Japanese honeysuckle and multiflora rose bushes though recent spraying appears to have helped control the problem here.
After about 75 yards, the continuation of Moundbuilder Trail breaks off to the left and heads for the Wilson's Mill parking lot. You will notice quite a few pines to your right here, especially when the hardwoods are bare during the colder months.
The trail will continue to twist and turn under tall canopy as it follows Stoneybrook upstream at the edge of the hollow as shown in the photo below.
In a few yards you will come to orienteering post #5 which will be followed almost immediately by a small wooden footbridge over the creek bed flowing down from Acorn Hollow. You will pass by a rusty old tractor wheel, a vestige of the Park's earlier agricultural period, as the trail generally runs flat along the edges of the hollow that encloses the creek. See the photo below.
Soon Acorn Hollow Trail will break off to your right and head up toward Bennett Ridge and the campground. Shortly after this, you may notice many large fallen hardwood trees further up the hillside to your right. There was a heavy blow down in this area from Hurricane Isabella in 2003.
A little further on, you see evidence of the old Froggy Hollow trail that used to break off at this point and head across Clarksburg Road to the schoolhouse and multi-use trails on the east side of the Park. But the Park managers closed this trail segment for safety reasons a few years ago and it is now reforesting so please do not use it.
You will soon come to a large rock outcropping on your right and in about 100 yards you will encounter a Trail Closed sign and a sharp turn in the trail with a sign pointing toward 'Hickory Hollow Trail' (see the photo below). You are actually continuing on Stoneybrook Trail and the Park recently closed Hickory Hollow Trail as part of its extensive trail rebuilding effort.
A few yards after making this right hand turn, you will cross over two small wooden footbridges. After the second bridge, you will notice that the trail begins to climb the hillside to your right and head away from Stoneybrook creek. See the photo below.
This is a new section of trail and will climb rather sharply up the hill for perhaps 200 yards. Eventually, the trail will begin to level off and, if you look to your left, you can see Stoneybrook hollow maybe 80-100 feet down below.
After the trail levels off, it will make a sharp right hand turn. In a little more than 100 yards it will end at the campground road near the entrance to Camping Loop B. See the photo below.
