Orienteering Course
Another way to experience Little Bennett Park's great outdoors is through use of one its three Orienteering Courses. Orienteering, otherwise known as "the thinking sport," requires participants to use a map and compass to navigate a course through unfamiliar terrain. People of all ages enjoy orienteering as a leisurely walk in the woods or as a competitive cross-country race. Little Bennett Park, with its extensive forest cover, challenging slopes, many modest stream crossings and size help make it a great site for an orienteering course.
Little Bennett orienteers can choose between the Beginner Level, Advanced Beginner Level, or Intermediate Level to practice, test, and master their orienteering skills. A small Trainer Level Orienteering Course is also available in the Little Bennett campground. If you're new to the sport of using map and compass to navigate from point to point, this course may be just what you need to get started. This course gets progressivley harder, and simulates some situations you may encounter on a real orienteering course. So grab your map and compass, and get lost finding your way around Little Bennett Campground! All four of the courses begin at the Hawk's Reach Activity Center located in the campground. We recommend you print off your own map and coordinates using the links above. By printing your own, you help us to be green and ensure that you will have a map and coordinates to work with after arriving at the park, as the brochure rack could be empty. The Quantico Orienteering Club, which holds an annual event in the Park, has a great website that provides a lot of useful and interesting information about the sport for those contemplating a challenging and exciting off-trail experience in Little Bennett Park. Future events will be listed on this website. The group says that newcomers are welcome to its meets, and they offer beginners' courses suitable for both individuals and families.
Orienteers prepare to start the 10th Annual Susquehanna Stumble held at Little Bennett Park.
