History

Montgomery Chapel Site and Cemetery
  • 1871: Chapel constructed (at a different location)
  • 1884: Chapel moved to this site and land sold to the church by George Butler
  • The church also served as a community meeting place and school before separate buildings for these purposes could be erected
  • 1964: Chapel closed due to diminished congregation
  • 1985 (approx): Chapel now disintegrated due to neglect
  • Now only represented by a cemetery, the site is representative of the growth of the post-Civil War African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) church when former slaves gathered to form small communities
  • Listed in the Locational Atlas of Historic Sites
