Hyattstown Mill and Miller's House
  • One of the last surviving mill structures in Montgomery County
  • 1783: Mill erected by William Richards
  • 1798: Hyattstown established
  • Early 1800s: The miller's house constructed
  • 1905: The mill converted to steam but retained the water wheel
  • 1918: The mill burned to ground; however, the community helped to rebuild it using material from the old Prices Distillery
  • 1933: Mill operations cease
  • 1966: Mill property purchased by MNCPPC
  • The mill is now occupied by the Hyattstown Mill Arts Project which sponsors exhibits, holds classes, and maintains a sculpture garden on the grounds
  • What to See: The mill exterior has been restored and the interior accommodates visitors well, though it is unheated; the mill race is quite visible and runs along Hyattstown Mill Road to the dam and mill pond about 1/2 mile upstream
  • Listed on the Master Plan for Historic Preservation in Montgomery County
  • To access the mill, turn on to Hyattstown Mill Road near the Hyattstown Firestation on MD 355; the mill is located just a couple hundred yards up the road and has limited parking on site
