Project: Little Bennett Park meadow/habitat restoration
Summary
This project would restore a small area of the park that has been overrun by non-native invasive plants (NNIs). The project would first clear the area of the NNIs and then use the removed plants to create brush piles that can provide cover and shelter for wildlife. Then native plants would be planted in place of the removed invasive plants to provide food for wildlife. The restoration site would be determined in coordination with Park managers. Planting stock and tools would be provided by the Parks Dept though volunteers may be asked to bring additional equipment such as loppers, shovels and rakes. This project must be done in the fall (Late Sept - October) or early spring (April - early May) planting seasons. This project may also require acquisition and use of donated materials for the construction of deer exclosures.
Background
The growth of non-native invasive plants is reducing available wildlife habitat because they crowd out native plants and are generally not eaten by native wildlife.
