Project: Conduct survey of selected non-native invasive plants on Little Bennett Park trails
Summary
This project would systematically scout out and identify selected non-native invasive plants found along trails in Little Bennett (normally only one or two types of plants are targeted in a single project). GPS coordinates would be recorded of all targeted specimens found. A map would be created from this occurrence data. Coordination with Parks Dept officials would help determine areas of the Park to be searched. This project may have seasonal restrictions depending on the species of plant selected for mapping as many plants are dormant during certain times of the year.
Background
Compared to other Montgomery County parks, Little Bennett has a relatively low-level of infestation of non-native invasive (NNI) plants. However, NNIs have been steadily increasing their coverage over the past 10 years and represent a threat that must be carefully addressed if we are to preserve Little Bennett's rich natural diversity. Accurate data about the occurrence of these plants is needed to develop plans to combat these threats.
