This project would involve cutting or pulling rapidly proliferating non-native invasive plant species in Little Bennett Park. Coordination with Park staff would be required to identify the target plant and area of the Park, removal method, and disposition of alien plants removed. Parks Dept tools could be used (saws, loppers, rakes etc) though the volunteers might also be asked to provide additional tools. This project may have seasonal restrictions depending on the species of plant selected for removal as many plants are dormant during certain times of the year.
Non-native invasive plants have no native predators, compete with and restrict the growth of native vegetation and do not serve as a feedsource for native wildlife. NNIs have been steadily increasing their presence in the Park over the past 10 years and represent a threat that must be aggressively addressed if we are to preserve Little Bennett's rich natural diversity. About 20 non-native invasive plants have been identified in Little Bennett Park. Among the most threatening species include Japanese barberry, garlic mustard, Japanese honeysuckle, mile-a-minute, Vietnamese stiltgrass, multiflora rose, and ailanthus.
