Clarksburg, Maryland

Little Bennett Regional Park is quite literally 'right next door' to Clarksburg, Maryland, as the photo on the right shows. The Park also has a Clarksburg address.

However, Little Bennett cannot be considered part of the 'town' of Clarksburg because technically Clarksburg is not classified as a town. Or a city, village or community.

Rather Clarksburg is classified by the US Census Bureau as a Census Designated Place (CDB), the same category given most other Montgomery County 'living spaces' including such addresses as Bethesda and Silver Spring. Other than the CDB designation, perhaps the one shared geographic concept among the Park and residents of the area is the same zip code - 20871.

Somewhat oddly, nearby Hyattstown is classified by the Census Bureau as a 'town' but it is contained within Clarksburg's 20871 zip code.

Clarksburg has deep rural and agricultural roots. Many homes in the community have been in the same family for generations. And the majority of land in Clarksburg is either part of the County's open-space protected Agriculture Reserve or contained within Little Bennett Regional Park.

However, Clarksburg is also the last major area of undeveloped land along the I-270 corridor in populous (nearly a million citizens!) and generally prosperous Montgomery County. And since about 2000 the 'new,' planned town of Clarksburg – called Clarksburg Town Center to help distinguish it from the more rural part of 20871 – has sprouted like corn from former farm fields. Despite the current economic slowdown, considerable future growth is expected in Clarksburg. As suggested by the previous paragraph, however, it will very largely be contained within the southeast quadrant of the 20871 zip code.
